Anemia in Children

Anaemia is defined as reduced haemoglobin (Hb) concentration below established cut off levels for age as shown in table below

Examination of FBC and peripheral blood

Severe forms of anaemia can lead to cardiac failure. Severity of anaemia canbe classified based on Hb as shown below:

  • Mild anaemia: Hb 9 – 11gm/dL

  • Moderate anaemia: Hb 7 – < 9gm/dL

  • Severe anaemia: Hb < 7gm/dL

SEVERE ANAEMIA


Diagnostic Criteria

  • Severe palmar pallor

  • Hb < 7g/dL

 

Investigations:

  • FBP

  • mRDT

  • BS for MPS

  • PLUS specific investigations as appropriate

Treatment

  • Give packed RBC 10 mls/kg over 3 hours if,

    • Hb is <4gm/dL OR

    • Hb is < 7g/dL with signs of cardiac failure.

  • Give Furosemide IV 1 mg/kg at the initiation of blood transfusion.

Note:


Provide specific treatment based on the underlying cause.
