Allergic Rhinitis

Introduction

It is an irritation of the nasal mucosa by an allergen in a previously sensitized individual. Common allergens include house dust (mite’s feaces), pollens, cockroach antigen, animal dander, moulds (in-door) 

Diagnostic Criteria

  • Itchy nostrils, throat, eyes

  • Watery nasal discharge

  • Nasal congestion

  • Sneezing  

Investigations:

  • Anterior rhinoscopy – watery nasal discharge, nasal congestion 

 

Pharmacological Treatment:

 

Avoidance of an allergen (if possible) 

 

  • Cetrizine (PO) 10mg daily for adults until when symptoms have improved. Children aged 2–6 years: 5mg daily until when symptoms have improved     

AND 

  • Beclomethasone (two puffs each nostril once daily) until symptoms have improved
