Amoebiasis Treatment

Amoebiasis is an infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. It can cause colitis and extra-intestinal manifestations. Infection is primarily acquired through ingestion of contaminated food or water and may occasionally be acquired through oral-anal sexual practices.


Clinical Presentation

  • Bloody diarrhea

  • Crampy abdominal pain

  • Fever

  • Weight loss

  • Peritonitis in severe forms


Investigations

  • Stool saline wet mount demonstrating motile trophozoites or cysts of Entamoeba histolytica


Pharmacological Treatment

Metronidazole

  • Dose: 400–800 mg

  • Route: Oral (PO)

  • Frequency: Every 8 hours

  • Duration: 5 days

OR


Tinidazole

  • Dose: 2 g

  • Route: Oral (PO)

  • Frequency: Every 24 hours

  • Duration: 3 days
