Amoebiasis Treatment
Amoebiasis is an infection caused by the protozoan Entamoeba histolytica. It can cause colitis and extra-intestinal manifestations. Infection is primarily acquired through ingestion of contaminated food or water and may occasionally be acquired through oral-anal sexual practices.
Clinical Presentation
Bloody diarrhea
Crampy abdominal pain
Fever
Weight loss
Peritonitis in severe forms
Investigations
Stool saline wet mount demonstrating motile trophozoites or cysts of Entamoeba histolytica
Pharmacological Treatment
Metronidazole
Dose: 400–800 mg
Route: Oral (PO)
Frequency: Every 8 hours
Duration: 5 days
OR
Tinidazole
Dose: 2 g
Route: Oral (PO)
Frequency: Every 24 hours
Duration: 3 days
