Diverticulosis management
Diverticulosis management
Diverticulosis is characterized by acquired herniation of the colonic mucosa and submucosa through areas where the vasa recta penetrate the bowel wall. It is thought to occur due to abnormal colonic motility and increased intraluminal pressure.
Clinical presentation
Asymptomatic disease
Most patients are asymptomatic and are diagnosed incidentally.
Complications
Approximately 5–15% of patients may develop diverticular hemorrhage.
Approximately <5% of patients may develop diverticulitis.
Note Patients presenting with diverticular hemorrhage should be managed according to gastrointestinal bleeding protocols. Patients presenting with diverticulitis should be evaluated and managed according to diverticulitis management guidelines.
