Hepatitis A

​

Hepatitis is the inflammation of liver cells. Five groups of viral hepatitis of public
health importance are A, B, C, D and E.

​

Hepatitis A is RNA virus, transmitted by faecal oral route usually by consumption of contaminated sea foods or water.
 

Diagnostic Criteria

​

  • Fever, jaundice, diarrhoea

  • Plus serological evidence of hepatitis A infection

 

Investigations

​

  • Serology for Hepatitis A

  • IgM

  • IgG

  • FBP

  • Liver function tests (Bilirubin, ALT,AST, PT, PTT, INR)

 

Treatment


Non Pharmacological treatment

​

  • Encourage breastfeeding

  • Ensure adequate fluid and calorie intake

 

Pharmacological treatment

​

  • No anti viral treatment is required.

  • Cautiously give Paracetamol 10mg/kg 8 hourly if temperature above 38.5ºC
