Hepatitis A
Hepatitis is the inflammation of liver cells. Five groups of viral hepatitis of public
health importance are A, B, C, D and E.
Hepatitis A is RNA virus, transmitted by faecal oral route usually by consumption of contaminated sea foods or water.
Diagnostic Criteria

Fever, jaundice, diarrhoea

Plus serological evidence of hepatitis A infection
Investigations

Serology for Hepatitis A
-
IgM
-
IgG
-
FBP
-
Liver function tests (Bilirubin, ALT,AST, PT, PTT, INR)
Treatment
Non Pharmacological treatment
-
Encourage breastfeeding
-
Ensure adequate fluid and calorie intake
Pharmacological treatment
-
No anti viral treatment is required.
-
Cautiously give Paracetamol 10mg/kg 8 hourly if temperature above 38.5ºC
