Implant contraceptives
Implants are contraindicated in:
Severe hypertension
Thromboembolism
Active liver disease
Sickle cell anaemia
Genital bleeding
Severe headaches
Recommended implants
Etonogestrel 68 mg in a single silastic capsule with applicator is implanted in the left upper arm with local anesthesia. It is effective for 3 years
OR
Levonorgestrel 75 mg in two silastic capsules implanted subdermally in the left upper arm with local anesthesia. It is effective for 5 years and is recommended for women who have completed their family or are not ready for sterilization or those not able to take estrogen containing contraceptives
Important notes on implants
Implants may be inserted during the immediate postpartum period or after 4 weeks postpartum
Intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD)
It is a device containing copper or levonorgestrel that is inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.
CuT380A intrauterine contraceptive device (IUCD) may also be used
It can be inserted during:
Immediate postpartum period
Within 48 hours postpartum
After 4 weeks postpartum
Contraindications to postpartum IUCD
Active postpartum haemorrhage
Puerperal sepsis or chorioamnionitis or active pelvic inflammatory disease
Allergy to copper
Period within 48 hours and 4 weeks postpartum
