Mastaitis- Postpartum care/Management

It is the inflammation of the breast usually associated with breastfeeding.


Clinical presentation

  • May develop rapidly

  • Breast becomes red and swollen, tenderness, warmth and burning sensation

  • Fever


Non-pharmacological treatment

  • Drinking plenty of liquids and resting

  • Feed the baby more frequently and ensure adequate emptying

  • Expressing the milk more often in non-breastfeeding mothers


Pharmacological treatment

  • Flucloxacillin + amoxicillin (FDC) (PO) 500 mg 12 hourly for 5–7 days


    OR

  • Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (FDC) (PO) 625 mg 12 hourly for 5–7 days


    AND

  • Ibuprofen (PO) 500 mg 8 hourly for 5 days


    OR

  • Paracetamol (PO) 500–1000 mg 8 hourly for 5 days
