Mastaitis- Postpartum care/Management
It is the inflammation of the breast usually associated with breastfeeding.
Clinical presentation
May develop rapidly
Breast becomes red and swollen, tenderness, warmth and burning sensation
Fever
Non-pharmacological treatment
Drinking plenty of liquids and resting
Feed the baby more frequently and ensure adequate emptying
Expressing the milk more often in non-breastfeeding mothers
Pharmacological treatment
Flucloxacillin + amoxicillin (FDC) (PO) 500 mg 12 hourly for 5–7 days
OR
Amoxicillin + clavulanic acid (FDC) (PO) 625 mg 12 hourly for 5–7 days
AND
Ibuprofen (PO) 500 mg 8 hourly for 5 days
OR
Paracetamol (PO) 500–1000 mg 8 hourly for 5 days
