Uncomplicated malaria in Children


Uncomplicated Malaria is malaria without severe signs or evidence of organ dysfunction.
 

Diagnostic Criteria

 

  • Fever

  • Positive mRDT or positive blood slide for malaria (BS for MPS)
     

Investigations

 

  • mRDT and/or blood slide for malaria parasites

 

Treatment


Non pharmacological treatment

 

 

  • Encourage breastfeeding

  • Adequate fluid and calorie intake

 

Pharmacological treatment

 

  • Give Artemether-Lumefantrine (ALu).

 

ALu (strength 20/120mg) is given based on pre-defined weight bands as
shown on the table below

Note:

 

  • If there is no improvement or child’s condition worsens within two days re-evaluate or refer the child for further management

  • In case of non-response to treatment with ALu give Dihydro artemisinin 
    and Piperaquine. The recommended dose is 4mg/kg/day of Dihydroartemisinin and 18mg/kg/day of Piperaquine once a day for 3days.
